Our Story
Built by filmmakers, for filmmakers, because the tools we needed didn't exist
Tools for Film started with a simple frustration: too much time wasted on set hunting through bookmarked spreadsheets, half-broken web apps, and phone notes trying to find the right depth-of-field number before a shot. We knew the formulas. We just needed a fast, reliable place to run them.

The Problem We Solved
Filmmaking is a precision craft. A wrong depth-of-field estimate costs you a sharp shot. A miscalculated storage estimate costs you a drive mid-shoot. A distribution deal modeled on bad math costs you real money. Yet for years, the available tools were either buried in expensive desktop software, poorly maintained web apps, or generic spreadsheets that required you to understand the formula before you could even use them.
We built Tools for Film to fix that. Our team brings together experience across cinematography, production management, post-production, and software engineering. Every calculator on this site was designed around a real workflow problem - something we or a colleague encountered on an actual production. The depth-of-field calculator came out of a pre-production lens comparison. The revenue forecast tool was built after sitting through confusing distributor deal memos. The slow-motion calculator was born from a high-speed camera rental where we needed overcrank math fast.
That production-first perspective shapes every decision we make about what to build and how to build it. We don't add features to pad the library. We build tools that solve a specific, real problem, and we make sure the output is accurate enough to use on a real job.
Who This Is For
Cinematographers and camera operators planning lens and exposure setups in pre-production—checking depth-of-field at a given aperture, verifying sensor crop factors, or calculating the right shutter angle for a look.
Producers and production managers who need to model distribution deals, estimate storage costs before a shoot, plan call sheet logistics, or run a quick budget estimate without spinning up a full spreadsheet.
Film students and emerging filmmakers learning the technical math behind cinematography and production—and who want tools that show the formula, not just the answer.
Anyone on set who needs a fast, reliable answer from a phone browser, without logging in, without signing up, and without waiting for a page to load.
How We Build
Speed First
Every calculator loads instantly and computes in real-time. No loading spinners, no server round-trips. You get answers as fast as you can type.
Privacy by Default
All calculations run entirely in your browser. No data is ever sent to a server, stored in a database, or shared with third parties.
Built for On-Set Use
Responsive design that works on phones, tablets, and monitors. Readable in bright sunlight or dark sets. Designed for time-sensitive production environments.
Accurate by Design
Every formula is sourced from industry-standard references: ASC manuals, manufacturer data sheets, and established cinematography texts. We show our math so you can verify it.
Our Commitment to You
Tools for Film will always be free to use. No paywalls, no feature-locked tiers, no mandatory accounts. The site is supported by advertising, which allows us to keep every calculator open and accessible to any filmmaker with an internet connection—whether they're on a studio lot or on a remote location with only a phone signal.
We review our formulas regularly and correct errors when they're found. If you spot a calculation that doesn't look right, we want to hear from you. Accuracy is the foundation of trust, and trust is the only metric that matters when someone is relying on your tool in a professional setting.
Every tool we add goes through the same filter: Does this solve a real production problem? Is the math verifiable? Does it work on a phone in a hurry? If the answer to any of those is no, it doesn't ship.
