The Africa Movie Academy Awards, known as AMAA, are the most prominent pan-African film awards ceremony. Presented by the Africa Film Academy, the awards honor outstanding filmmaking from across the African continent and the African diaspora. The ceremony takes place annually in Lagos, Nigeria, and draws filmmakers, actors, and industry professionals from dozens of African nations.
AMAA recognizes films in multiple languages and from diverse filmmaking traditions, reflecting Africa's enormous cultural and linguistic diversity. History
AMAA was founded in 2005 by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, a Nigerian filmmaker and cultural advocate who recognized the need for a continental awards platform to celebrate and promote African cinema. Before AMAA, African films competed primarily at international festivals and national ceremonies, with no pan-African institution dedicated to honoring the continent's filmmaking output as a whole.
The awards quickly established themselves as the premier recognition platform for African cinema. The regional categories (West, East, Southern Africa) acknowledge the distinct filmmaking traditions within the continent, while the overarching Best Film category brings them together in a single competition.
Nollywood, which produces thousands of films per year and ranks as one of the world's largest film industries by volume, is a major presence at AMAA. However, the awards have also been instrumental in raising the profile of smaller national industries from Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Senegal, Burkina Faso, and other countries.
