Overview

The AAFCA Awards are presented annually by the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), an organization of more than 100 Black film critics and entertainment journalists. The 17th annual ceremony took place on February 8, 2026, at The Maybourne Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, California. AAFCA president and co-founder Gil Robertson announced the winners on December 9, 2025.

Sinners (Warner Bros.) dominated the 17th annual awards, winning 8 categories including Best Film, Best Director and Best Writing for Ryan Coogler, Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku, Best Ensemble, Best Music for Ludwig Goransson, and Emerging Face (Actor) for Miles Caton. Hedda (Amazon MGM) won Best Actress for Tessa Thompson and Best Independent Feature.

AAFCA also publishes a Top 10 Films of the Year list, which for 2025 was led by Sinners, followed by One Battle After Another, Hedda, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Wicked: For Good, F1, One of Them Days, The Knife, and The Smashing Machine.

• Timing between Globes and Oscars: The early February ceremony date places AAFCA between the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. Films that peak early in awards season benefit from this timing, while films that gain momentum later in the cycle may miss AAFCA consideration entirely.
