Overview

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are the annual awards ceremony recognizing achievement in independent film and television. Presented by Film Independent, a nonprofit arts organization, the Spirit Awards apply specific budget and independence criteria that distinguish them from broader industry ceremonies. The 41st ceremony took place on February 15, 2026, at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, hosted by actress and comedian Ego Nwodim. The ceremony was broadcast live on YouTube via Film Independent's and IMDb's channels.

The Spirit Awards moved from their longtime home at the Santa Monica Pier to the Hollywood Palladium in 2026, as the Santa Monica site underwent renovations. The ceremony was held approximately one month before the 98th Academy Awards (March 15, 2026), positioning Spirit Award winners to potentially influence Oscar voting. The 2025 Spirit Awards winners were dominated by Anora, which won Best Feature, Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison, and Best Director for Sean Baker, all of which repeated at the Academy Awards.

Eligibility and Budget Rules

The budget ceiling for all feature films, after tax incentives, is $30 million. The budget ceiling for the John Cassavetes Award is $1 million. These caps are firm: films with budgets exceeding $30 million after tax incentives are ineligible in any category. For example, Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another was ineligible for the 41st Spirit Awards because its budget exceeded the ceiling.

Film Independent does not define "independent" strictly on the basis of financing. Since 1994, the organization has considered films made with an "economy of means" as eligible even if fully financed by a studio or indie studio division, provided the subject matter is original and provocative. The first studio-financed film honored was Darnell Martin's I Like It Like That from Columbia Pictures in 1994.

The Nominating Committees apply four guidelines when selecting nominees:

• Original, provocative subject matter
• Diversity (on camera and behind the camera)
• Economy of means

Television categories require independent television programming with a first-run US distribution. Eligible series must have budgets below a per-episode threshold set by Film Independent.

Nominations were announced December 3, 2025, via YouTube. Only Film Independent Members vote to determine winners. Membership is open to the public. Voting takes place online through a secure third-party website, with ballots tabulated by Integrity Voting Systems.

History

The Spirit Awards began in 1986 as the FINDIE Awards (Friends of Independents), created to champion films produced outside the traditional studio system. The ceremony was renamed the Independent Spirit Awards in its second year. Early winners included After Hours (1985) and Platoon (1986).

The awards have tracked the evolution of independent film through every major shift: the indie boom of the early 1990s, the rise of specialty divisions within major studios, the digital filmmaking revolution, and the streaming era. In 2023, the Spirit Awards became one of the first major awards ceremonies to eliminate gendered performance categories, moving to gender-neutral acting awards.
