IFC Films
New York-based independent distributor and pioneer of the day-and-date release model, releasing international, arthouse, and genre films in the US market.
Overview
IFC Films is an independent film distribution company based in New York and a division of AMC Networks. Founded in 2000 as the distribution arm of the Independent Film Channel, IFC Films distributes independent, international, and genre films in the United States. The company releases between 20 and 40 films per year and is one of the most active specialty distributors in the North American market.
IFC Films is widely credited as the pioneer of the day-and-date release model -- simultaneously releasing films in theaters and on VOD on the same date. The company adopted this approach in 2006, at the time a radical departure from the traditional theatrical window model. The strategy has since been widely adopted across the independent distribution space and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, by major studios.
Distribution Model
IFC Films uses a hybrid distribution model across its releases. Some titles receive a traditional theatrical-first release with a subsequent VOD window. Others are released day-and-date across theaters and IFC's VOD platforms, including IFC Films Unlimited (its subscription channel on AMC+) and transactional platforms such as Apple TV, Vudu, and Amazon. A third tier of titles -- marketed under the IFC Midnight and Sundance Selects labels -- follow label-specific strategies.
The day-and-date approach allows IFC to release films in markets where theatrical playdates are unavailable, expanding the addressable audience for films that might otherwise receive only limited city-by-city theatrical runs. For documentaries and foreign-language films with small but dedicated audiences, this model often generates stronger total revenue than a purely theatrical approach.
IFC Midnight and Sundance Selects
IFC operates two sub-labels alongside the main IFC Films banner:
- IFC Midnight -- releases genre films, particularly horror and thriller, with a mixed theatrical and day-and-date strategy. IFC Midnight has distributed films including The Witch, Tigers Are Not Afraid, and Synchronic.
- Sundance Selects -- releases documentary and international films with a focus on Sundance acquisitions. The label provides a dedicated acquisition channel for films coming out of the Sundance Film Festival.
What Filmmakers Should Know
IFC Films is one of the more accessible distribution partners for independent filmmakers with completed projects. The company acquires films at Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, Toronto, and at the American Film Market. IFC's day-and-date model means the company can offer distribution to films that might not qualify for a traditional theatrical-only release, broadening the range of projects it can work with.
The minimum guarantee structure at IFC is typically lower than at A24, NEON, or Sony Pictures Classics, reflecting the company's higher volume and more accessible acquisition threshold. Filmmakers should understand the trade-off between accessibility and deal terms when evaluating IFC against other distributors.
IFC's ownership by AMC Networks gives the distributor a guaranteed platform window through AMC+, which is a meaningful benefit for films targeting the streaming audience alongside theatrical. Films that reach IFC Films Unlimited are available to AMC+ subscribers, providing ongoing audience access after the initial release window closes.
Notable Releases
The Witch (2015), 20th Century Women (2016), The Act of Killing (2012), Anomalisa (2015), The Lighthouse (2019 -- acquired before A24 pickup), Born in China (2016), Upstream Color (2013). IFC's catalog spans arthouse drama, documentary, and genre, reflecting the breadth of its acquisition strategy.
