AFI Fest

Overview

AFI Fest is the American Film Institute's annual film festival, held each fall at the TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood. The 40th edition runs October 21 to 25, 2026, presented by Canva. Every screening is free to the public, funded through sponsorships and AFI's institutional budget. That open-access model, combined with a Hollywood location during awards season, makes AFI Fest a hybrid of public cultural event and industry screening room.

Submission Details

AFI Fest accepts short film submissions only (40 minutes and under) through FilmFreeway. Feature-length films invited to screen at the festival are curated by the programming team, not submitted through an open call.

Eligibility requirements:

• Films must be 40 minutes or under
• Films must have been completed on or after October 1, 2025 (for the 2026 edition)
• Live action, documentary, and animated shorts are all accepted
• No geographic premiere requirement for short films
• Short films remain eligible regardless of television broadcast history or online availability
• Non-English films must include English subtitles
• Rough cuts and works-in-progress are eligible if the final cut is available by May 31, 2026

Submission deadlines for AFI Fest 2026:

Submission fees are tiered across these three deadlines and are non-refundable. The exact fee amounts are listed on the AFI Fest FilmFreeway page. Fee waivers are available only to AFI Conservatory Fellows, AFI Conservatory Alumni, and AFI Festivals Alumni, and must be requested before the final deadline by emailing fest.programming@AFI.com.

All filmmakers receive notification of their status by September 25, 2026, via the email address used for submission.

For Short Filmmakers

AFI Fest's short film competition is the primary entry point for independent filmmakers. AFI Fest does not accept open submissions for feature-length films. Features are curated by the programming team, typically through relationships with distributors, sales agents, and production companies. If you have a feature film you want considered, the path is through your distributor or sales agent contacting AFI's programming department directly.

Industry Value

AFI Fest's industry programming is less structured than the markets at Cannes or Berlin. There is no official film market attached to the festival. However, the networking value of an LA festival during awards season is real. The festival hosts conversations, panels, and filmmaker events that bring together established and emerging talent. For short filmmakers, the exposure to Academy voters alone justifies the submission fee.

Awards

AFI Fest presents a Grand Jury Award for short films and audience awards. The festival does not operate a traditional competition with jury prizes for features. Its influence is exercised through programming selection and awards-season positioning rather than competitive prizes.

Festival History

AFI Fest was founded in 1987 as AFI Fest/Los Angeles International Film Festival, making the 2026 edition the 40th. The festival has gone through several iterations, including a period as a competitive festival and its current model as a free, curated event. The shift to free admission in 2011 increased public attendance significantly and repositioned the festival as a cultural event accessible to the entire Los Angeles community.

Submission Tips Specific to AFI Fest
