Overview

The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) is one of the largest and most respected animation festivals in the world. Founded in 1976 and held biennially in Ottawa, Canada's capital city, OIAF screens hundreds of animated films from around the world and attracts animators, directors, and industry professionals from across the global animation industry.

OIAF sits alongside Annecy (France) and Hiroshima (Japan) as one of the three most significant animation festivals in the world. While Annecy tends toward mainstream and commercial animation, OIAF has cultivated a reputation for embracing the full range of animated expression, from commercial studio work to experimental and auteur animation.

The festival's biennial format (held in even-numbered years) gives it a two-year horizon that concentrates the best animated work of the intervening period into a single competitive event. The Grand Prix is one of the most coveted awards in international animation.

Key Sections

  • Animated Short Film Competition -- the core competitive program
  • Animated Feature Film Competition
  • Student Animation Competition -- short films by animation students
  • Animation For Kids -- programming for younger audiences
  • Industry Program -- professional development and networking
  • Retrospectives -- programs honoring animation history and pioneers

What Filmmakers Should Know

OIAF accepts open submissions in its biennial year. The festival is receptive to animation in all styles and techniques, from hand-drawn to digital to stop-motion to experimental forms. Student animators benefit from the dedicated student competition section and the access to industry professionals that the festival provides.

Ottawa's animation industry, while smaller than Montreal's, has a respected community and the festival connects emerging animators with studios, directors, and production companies from across North America and internationally.

Festival History

OIAF was founded in 1976 and has operated biennially since its early years. Ottawa's government-city character, with its institutions and universities, provides a stable cultural environment for a biennial animation celebration.
