Overview

The Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (BAFICI) is one of the most important film festivals in Latin America and one of the leading platforms for independent and alternative cinema worldwide. Founded in 1999 and held annually in April, BAFICI screens approximately 400 films from around the world during its 10-day run in Buenos Aires.

BAFICI has built its reputation as a festival that champions formally adventurous, politically engaged, and artistically unconventional cinema. Buenos Aires's rich cinephile culture provides the festival with knowledgeable, enthusiastic audiences who engage seriously with experimental and art house work. The festival has been particularly strong in discovering emerging filmmakers from Argentina and Latin America before their work gains international recognition.

Argentina's filmmaking tradition has produced internationally acclaimed directors including Lucrecia Martel, Pablo Trapero, Lisandro Alonso, and Carlos Reygadas (Mexico), and BAFICI has provided early platforms for many of these voices.

Buenos Aires has one of the highest cinema attendance rates per capita in the world, and BAFICI's audiences bring an exceptional level of engagement and critical awareness. Filmmakers receive substantive feedback from both critics and audiences.
