Cairo International Film Festival

The oldest and only FIAPF-accredited competitive film festival in the Arab world and Africa, held annually in November in Cairo, Egypt.

Overview

The Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) is the oldest film festival in the Arab world and Africa, and the only FIAPF-accredited competitive feature film festival on either continent. Founded in 1976, CIFF takes place annually in November at the Cairo Opera House complex and screens approximately 150 films from over 50 countries.

CIFF occupies a unique position as the premier platform for cinema from the Arab world and North Africa while also programming a broad international selection. The festival's Golden Pyramid award is the highest prize and carries significance across the region's film industries. Egypt's long and storied filmmaking tradition, dating back to the 1920s, provides CIFF with deep cultural roots in the art form.

The festival has worked to rebuild its international profile in recent years after periods of political instability, and its FIAPF accreditation underscores its commitment to meeting the standards of the world's top competitive festivals.

What Filmmakers Should Know

CIFF accepts submissions for its competition and sidebar sections. The festival is particularly receptive to films from the Middle East, North Africa, and the broader African continent, making it a strategic platform for filmmakers from these regions. International films benefit from exposure to Egyptian and regional audiences and industry.

The Industry Days program connects filmmakers with regional financiers, distributors, and co-production partners. Egypt's domestic film market is the largest in the Arab world, and CIFF provides a gateway to this audience.

Festival History

CIFF was founded in 1976 and has operated annually since then, with occasional interruptions due to political events. The festival's founding reflected Egypt's position as the Hollywood of the Arab world, with a domestic film industry that has produced thousands of films over the past century. CIFF continues to serve as a bridge between Arab, African, and international cinema.
