Overview

Nightstream is a curated transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) platform for genre films, operated by the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival in association with the Boston Underground Film Festival and the Overlook Film Festival. It launched in 2020 as a virtual film festival when COVID-19 shut down in-person events, ran two festival editions in 2020 and 2021, and relaunched on October 31, 2023 as a year-round streaming platform where audiences can rent or buy independent horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and genre films.

The 2020 and 2021 editions accepted film submissions via FilmFreeway, with early bird, regular, and late deadlines (in 2021: early bird July 23, regular August 6, late August 17). Since the 2023 relaunch as a TVOD platform, the model has shifted from festival submissions to distribution partnerships.

Festival History (2020-2021)

Nightstream was founded in 2020 when four US genre festivals - the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival (NY), the Boston Underground Film Festival (MA), the North Bend Film Festival (WA), and the Overlook Film Festival (LA) - joined forces to create a shared virtual platform after COVID-19 forced the cancellation of their in-person events. The first edition ran in October 2020 and included world premieres of Run, The Doorman, Frank & Zed, Honeydew, It Cuts Deep, Reunion, and An Unquiet Grave, along with numerous US and North American premieres.

The 2020 edition donated proceeds to the National Alliance to End Homelessness and the Sunrise Movement, alongside payments to participating artists and festivals. The 2021 edition ran October 7-13 and for the first time opened film submissions for features and shorts, with the shorts program presented by Gunpowder & Sky's ALTER and DUST brands. Early bird passes in 2021 were priced at $45 for a Night Owl Badge (five films) and $79 for a Homebody Badge (10 films).

After 2021, the founding festivals resumed their in-person events. In 2023, Justin Timms spearheaded the relaunch of Nightstream as a year-round TVOD platform, transitioning the brand from a seasonal virtual festival into a permanent curated streaming destination for genre films.

Current Status and Platform Details

As of 2026, Nightstream operates as a TVOD platform accessible to US audiences. The platform's catalog has grown beyond its initial 30 titles, though it remains curated rather than open-submission. Films on the platform include Jane Schoenbrun's We're All Going to World's Fair (Utopia), Gaspar Noe's Lux Aeterna (Yellow Veil Pictures), and Joel Potrykus's Buzzard (Oscilloscope).

The platform is US-focused. Titles are available to rent or buy, with most titles offering both options. Pricing varies by title but defaults to $4.99 rental and $12.99 purchase.
