Overview

Fantasia International Film Festival is the largest genre film festival in North America outside the United States and one of the most important genre events in the world. Founded in 1996 and held annually in July in Montreal, the festival screens approximately 150 films from over 40 countries during its three-week run, making it one of the longest-running genre film events in the world.

Fantasia has built its reputation on championing genre cinema from around the world, with particular strength in Asian cinema. The festival has long been one of the leading Western platforms for Japanese, Korean, and Hong Kong genre films, introducing international audiences to directors who have subsequently become acclaimed figures in world cinema.

The festival's length and program breadth make it unlike any other genre event. Fantasia screens horror, science fiction, fantasy, action, thriller, animation, experimental, and hybrid genre works, embracing the full spectrum of popular and transgressive cinema. The Fantasia audience is one of the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic in the world for this material.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Fantasia accepts open submissions through its portal. The festival is genuinely global in its programming and actively seeks genre films from underrepresented regions. Fantasia has been the discovery platform for numerous directors who went on to international careers, and the Cheval Noir and New Flesh competitions provide meaningful competitive recognition.

The Frontieres International Co-Production Market, which operates during the festival, is the only dedicated genre film financing market in the world. Frontieres connects genre producers, directors, and financiers in structured pitching sessions and helps genre projects secure international co-production partnerships and distribution. For genre filmmakers with projects in development, Frontieres is a uniquely valuable platform.

Festival History

Fantasia was founded in 1996 as a celebration of Hong Kong action cinema and quickly expanded into a comprehensive genre festival. The founders' passion for Asian genre cinema remains a distinctive element of the festival's programming philosophy, though Fantasia now embraces global genre filmmaking from every region. The festival moved to the Concordia University Hall Building as its primary venue in the 2000s and has operated there since.
