Fantastic Fest

The largest genre film festival in the United States, held annually in September in Austin, Texas, celebrating horror, sci-fi, fantasy, action, and genre-defying cinema.

Overview

Fantastic Fest is the largest genre film festival in the United States, held annually in September at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, Texas. Founded in 2005 by Tim League (co-founder of the Alamo Drafthouse chain), Fantastic Fest celebrates horror, science fiction, fantasy, action, and genre-defying cinema with a program of approximately 100 features and 80 shorts over eight days.

The festival occupies a unique position in the US festival landscape. Its September timing places it alongside Venice and Toronto, but its programming is entirely distinct from those prestige-oriented events. Fantastic Fest is where genre cinema receives its most enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and influential audience reception in North America.

Fantastic Fest screens films at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, where audiences can eat and drink during screenings. This casual, communal atmosphere encourages the vocal audience reactions that genre films thrive on. Midnight screenings, secret screenings, and special events create an immersive festival experience.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Fantastic Fest accepts open submissions through its portal and through FilmFreeway. The festival has FIAPF Competitive Specialised accreditation, giving it official international recognition. Distributors including Neon, A24, IFC Midnight, and Shudder attend the festival to acquire genre titles, making Fantastic Fest a genuine marketplace for genre content.

The Next Wave section targets debut filmmakers and is an excellent platform for first-time genre directors. The festival's audience is genre-literate and responds enthusiastically to strong work, creating word-of-mouth that carries films beyond the festival.
