Overview

FESPACO (Festival Panafricain du Cinema et de la Television de Ouagadougou) is the largest and most important film festival in Africa. Held biennially (in odd-numbered years) in the West African city of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, FESPACO celebrates cinema made by African filmmakers and members of the African diaspora worldwide. The festival attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees and is a defining event in African cultural life.

Founded in 1969 at a time when African cinema was emerging as a significant artistic force, FESPACO has grown into a festival that shapes the African film landscape. The Golden Stallion of Yennenga (Etalon d'Or de Yennenga), named after the legendary founder of the Mossi people, is the top prize and one of the most prestigious awards in African cinema.

FESPACO's mission extends beyond film exhibition to encompass African film education, distribution infrastructure, and cultural policy. The festival has been instrumental in building the networks and institutions that support African cinema at the continental level.

Key Sections

  • Feature Film Competition -- African narrative features competing for the Golden Stallion
  • Documentary Competition -- African nonfiction features
  • Short Film Competition
  • Television Series Competition -- African television productions
  • Diaspora Films -- films by African filmmakers working outside Africa
  • Pan-African Television Market (MICA) -- industry marketplace
  • Colloquium -- academic and professional discussions on African cinema

What Filmmakers Should Know

FESPACO screens only films directed by Africans or members of the African diaspora. This restriction is central to the festival's mission of championing African voices rather than films about Africa made by outsiders. All competition films must have their Africa premiere at FESPACO.

The festival takes place in Ouagadougou, a landlocked West African capital that is not easily reached from most parts of the world. Despite the logistical challenges, the festival draws filmmakers, critics, and cultural figures from across Africa and the diaspora, creating a genuinely pan-African gathering.

The biennial format means that FESPACO operates on a two-year cycle, with editions in odd-numbered years (2025, 2027, etc.). Planning ahead is essential for filmmakers targeting FESPACO.

Festival History

FESPACO was founded in 1969 by a group of Burkinabe film enthusiasts who organized screenings of African films in the capital. The Burkina Faso government quickly recognized the cultural importance of the event and provided institutional support. FESPACO grew through the 1970s and 1980s as African cinema flourished under directors including Ousmane Sembene, Djibril Diop Mambety, and Souleymane Cisse.
