Overview

The IDFA Forum is the co-production and co-financing market of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), the world's largest documentary festival. The 33rd IDFA Forum takes place November 16-19, 2026 alongside the 39th IDFA festival (November 12-22, 2026). In 2025, the Forum selected 51 projects from 841 submissions, connecting documentary filmmakers with international broadcasters, financiers, and co-producers through live pitch sessions, one-on-one meetings, and rough-cut presentations.

The Forum is not a film submission platform for completed documentaries. It is an industry market for documentary projects in development or production seeking financing and co-production partners. Filmmakers submit projects via the MyIDFA portal, with the submission window for the 2026 Forum opening approximately June 2, 2026. Selected projects receive live presentation slots, listing in the IDFA Forum printed publication and online project collection, free submission to IDFA festival upon completion, and free entry into the Docs for Sale catalogue (IDFA's distribution market).

IDFA itself was founded in 1988 and screens approximately 300 films annually with around 300,000 visitors. The festival is Oscar-qualifying for short documentaries. The Forum runs concurrently with Docs for Sale, IDFA's market and distribution incubator for creative documentary films, which in 2025 moved to a new location at Het Documentaire Paviljoen in central Amsterdam.

Forum Structure and Sections

The IDFA Forum operates across four distinct presentation formats, each targeting projects at different stages and with different financing needs:

• Forum Pitch - the core pitch format where selected projects present to an audience of international broadcasters, financiers, and co-producers. Projects must be in production (started shooting, not yet in post). A strong visual trailer or clip is required. No minimum financing is required, but confirmed commitments strengthen the application. In 2025, the Forum Pitch and Producers Connection combined featured 33 projects.

• Producers Connection - runs alongside the Forum Pitch as an integrated program. In 2025, Producers Connection presentations took place on November 17-18 at ITA (Instituut voor de Tijdgenoot). This format is designed for projects seeking co-production partners rather than direct financing.

• Rough Cut Presentations - projects at the rough-cut stage are presented to a curated audience for feedback and potential completion funding. In 2025, Rough Cut projects were presented on November 16 at Pathe City cinema.

• DocLab Forum - presentations for new-media and interactive projects at various stages of development and production. In 2025, 12 new-media projects were presented, including VR narratives, AR installations, AI-driven works, and multimedia installations. DocLab Forum presentations took place on November 17 at @droog.

The 2025 Forum also introduced new thematic Informative Panels offering practical insights on navigating the documentary financing landscape, replacing the conventional post-pitch feedback format. One-on-one meetings remain integral to the Forum, allowing in-depth discussions on creative intent, financing strategies, and potential collaborations.

Submission Details

For the IDFA Forum (industry market for projects in development/production):

• Submission window opens approximately June 2, 2026 via MyIDFA
• Submission requires: logline (max 30 words), synopsis (max 400 words), project description (max 700 words), director and producer bios, password-protected Vimeo screener, trailer or visual material, financing details, and any confirmed financial commitments
• Projects must be documentaries in production (started shooting, not yet in post)
• Independent production companies worldwide are eligible
• No minimum financing required, but the quality of the trailer is critical, as industry professionals use it before the event to decide which projects to request meetings with

For IDFA festival film entries (completed documentaries):

• Film entries for the 39th IDFA (November 12-22, 2026) are open via the IDFA professionals page
• First deadline: April 23, 2026
• Final deadline: July 9, 2026
• Films must be completed after July 10, 2025
• IDFA accepts documentary films in any format and of any duration (features and shorts), including hybrid films and new media projects
• Premiere requirements: IDFA prioritizes World, International, European, or Dutch premieres, in that order. For Dutch productions, only world premieres are accepted in competition categories
• Films previously screened in the Netherlands, broadcast on Dutch television, or available via VOD/SVOD/any online platform in the Netherlands are not eligible
• Rejected works-in-progress cannot be resubmitted for the current or following edition
• Films submitted for consideration in previous years are not eligible, even if significantly changed
• Entry fees apply (see official regulations for current amounts)
• Submissions must be made via the festival's website, not FilmFreeway

• IDFA Competition for Feature-Length Documentary (70+ minutes, world/international/European premiere required)
• IDFA Competition for First Appearance (70+ minutes, first feature-length films only)
• IDFA Competition for Mid-Length Documentary (40-70 minutes)
• IDFA Competition for Dutch Documentary (40+ minutes, Dutch productions, world premiere only)
• IDFA Competition for Short Documentary (under 40 minutes)
• IDFA Competition for Student Documentary (graduation films from film schools/universities)
• DocLab Competition (immersive and new media)
• DOC U Competition (youth jury category)

What Filmmakers Should Know

For documentary filmmakers with projects in production: The IDFA Forum is one of the most important co-financing markets for creative documentary in the world. A Forum selection puts your project in front of commissioners from ARTE, BBC, PBS, VPRO, YLE, DR, and other major documentary broadcasters. The key to a successful Forum application is the quality of your trailer or visual material. Industry professionals review trailers before the event to decide which projects to request meetings with, so a weak trailer will limit your meeting opportunities regardless of the project's merit.

For documentary filmmakers with completed films: IDFA is the world's largest documentary festival and an Oscar-qualifying festival for short documentaries. A selection at IDFA provides international visibility, access to the Docs for Sale distribution market, and qualification for IDFA's competition awards. The festival's premiere requirements are strict: for competition categories, films must not have been broadcast or streamed internationally. National theatrical release or television broadcast in the film's country of origin is permitted.

For first-time documentary filmmakers: The First Appearance competition is specifically for first feature-length documentaries. The Student Documentary competition accepts graduation films from film schools. IDFA also operates the IDFA Bertha Fund, which provides cash grants for early-stage projects by filmmakers from specific regions (Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Oceania), and the IDFA Bertha Fund Classic, which supports projects at the production or post-production stage.

For new-media and interactive creators: The DocLab Forum and DocLab Competition provide a dedicated platform for immersive, interactive, and digital documentary work. The 20th edition of IDFA DocLab in 2026 accepts immersive installations, performances, digital and web-based works, games, audio projects, fulldome, and interactive experiences. An early deadline for presentation support grants and reduced entry fees is April 14, 2026.

The selection maintained gender balance across formats, with production countries spanning all continents. The Forum discontinued the conventional post-pitch feedback format in 2025, replacing it with Informative Panels and maintaining one-on-one meetings as the core networking mechanism.
