Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival
Central Europe's largest documentary film festival, held annually in October in Jihlava, Czech Republic, with a distinctive focus on creative documentary and border-crossing nonfiction forms.
Overview
The Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival is Central Europe's largest documentary film festival, held annually in late October and early November in Jihlava, a small city in the Czech-Moravian Highlands. Founded in 1997, the festival screens approximately 250 films and has built a reputation for championing the most formally adventurous and intellectually rigorous documentary work.
Ji.hlava has a distinctive programming philosophy that values documentary as a creative form rather than merely an informational one. The festival actively seeks films that blur the boundaries between documentary and fiction, documentary and essay, and documentary and art. This openness to hybrid and experimental nonfiction has established Ji.hlava as one of Europe's most important platforms for creative documentary.
The Czech Republic has a distinguished tradition of documentary filmmaking, and Ji.hlava serves as the most important domestic documentary platform alongside its international program. Czech documentary has regularly competed at IDFA, CPH:DOX, and other major events, and Ji.hlava is the home celebration for this tradition.
