Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF) -- Now Image Nation

A former major Gulf film festival held in Abu Dhabi from 2007 to 2015, which was absorbed into Image Nation Abu Dhabi's production and distribution activities after ceasing as a standalone event.

Overview

The Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF) operated as one of the Gulf region's most prominent film festivals from 2007 to 2015, serving alongside the Dubai International Film Festival as a twin pillar of Gulf cinema culture. The festival was presented by Image Nation Abu Dhabi, a media company backed by Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund, which used the festival as a platform for the emirate's ambitions in the global entertainment industry.

At its peak, ADFF screened over 100 films from more than 50 countries, presented the Muhr Award for Arab cinema alongside international prizes, and served as a significant market for Arab content. The festival's final edition was held in 2015, after which Image Nation refocused its efforts on direct film production and distribution rather than festival programming.

The story of ADFF reflects the rapid evolution of the Gulf region's approach to entertainment. Both ADFF and DIFF went on hiatus within a few years of each other as the Gulf's entertainment strategy shifted from festival hosting to direct content investment, production infrastructure, and platform development.
