Overview

The Tirana International Film Festival is Albania's most important film festival. Founded in 2003 and held annually in November in Tirana, Albania's capital and largest city, the festival presents Albanian and Balkan cinema and connects Albanian filmmakers with the broader international film community.

Albania opened to the world only in the early 1990s after decades of extreme isolation under Enver Hoxha's communist regime. Albanian cinema, which had been tightly controlled under communism, has been rebuilding since the 1990s, and the Tirana festival provides the most important platform for this cultural renewal.

The festival reflects Tirana's rapid transformation from a gray communist capital into a colorful, energetic Mediterranean city with a growing arts and creative scene.
