Overview

Animafest Zagreb is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious animation film festivals. Founded in 1972 in Zagreb and holding FIAPF Competitive Specialised accreditation, the festival is one of four competitive animation festivals recognized by FIAPF alongside Annecy, Ottawa, and Hiroshima, forming the so-called "grand slam" of competitive animation festivals.

The festival presents competitive programming across all forms of animated film -- traditional cel animation, stop motion, computer animation, experimental animation, and animated documentary -- with particular emphasis on auteur animation that uses the medium for personal artistic expression rather than purely commercial purposes.

Zagreb has a distinguished place in animation history. The Zagreb School of Animation, which emerged in the late 1950s, was one of the most innovative forces in world animation, producing short films that won Oscar nominations and influenced generations of animators globally. Animafest celebrates this heritage while presenting the best of contemporary global animation.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Animafest accepts open submissions. FIAPF accreditation means competitive wins carry maximum international recognition. For animation filmmakers, Animafest is one of the four grand slam competitive festivals, and a win here is among the most prestigious recognitions in the field.

The festival's strong auteur tradition makes it particularly receptive to formally adventurous, personal, and experimental animation.
