Overview

Cine PE is Brazil's most important regional film festival outside Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Founded in 1997 and held annually in April in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco state in northeastern Brazil, the festival celebrates northeastern Brazilian cinema and provides an internationally oriented platform for one of Brazil's most culturally distinctive regions.

Pernambuco and the Brazilian Northeast have produced some of Brazil's most innovative filmmakers, with a regional creative tradition that is distinct from the cultural centers of the south. The Cinema do Interior Paulista movement and the Recife-based filmmakers who developed a distinctive regional aesthetic have gained international recognition through the festival.

Recife's position on Brazil's Atlantic coast, its colonial heritage, its frevo and maracatu musical traditions, and its Afro-Brazilian culture give the festival a rich cultural context.
