Brunei International Film Festival
Brunei's most important film event, held in Bandar Seri Begawan, presenting Bruneian and Southeast Asian cinema and supporting the development of filmmaking in the small but wealthy Bornean sultanate.
Overview
The Brunei International Film Festival is Brunei's most important film event. Founded in 2015 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei's capital, the festival presents Bruneian and Southeast Asian cinema in the small but wealthy Bornean sultanate.
Brunei's tiny population (under half a million) and its oil-funded wealth give it unusual cultural infrastructure for its size. The country's Islamic cultural tradition, its Malay heritage, and its position on the island of Borneo create a distinctive context for filmmaking. Brunei shares Borneo with Malaysian Sabah and Sarawak and Indonesian Kalimantan, and the festival reflects these connections.
