Overview

The Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival (GZDOC) is China's only state-level professional platform with documentary financing and trading functions. Founded in 2003 and hosted by the National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) and the People's Government of Guangdong Province, GZDOC has spent over two decades building a comprehensive event that integrates competition, screening, pitching, training, forums, and market. The 22nd edition runs November 26 to 28, 2025, in Guangzhou.

For documentary filmmakers, GZDOC is the single most important entry point into the Chinese documentary market. Chinese state television and streaming platforms rank among the world's largest commissioners of documentary content, and GZDOC is where international filmmakers gain direct access to these commissioning networks. The festival's pitching forum connects projects with Chinese public and private financing, and its market floor handles sales and acquisition activities for documentary content across theatrical, broadcast, and streaming distribution.

Submissions are open through FilmFreeway. The 2025 deadline was August 31, with submission fees ranging from $10 (early bird, short/micro) to $25 (late, feature/series). Films must be completed after January 1, 2022, and must be subtitled or dubbed in English. Commercial films, fiction films, and TV programs are not eligible.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Submissions: GZDOC accepts open submissions through FilmFreeway. The festival accepts four categories of documentary: feature documentary (over 40 minutes), short documentary (10 to 40 minutes), micro documentary (under 10 minutes), and documentary series (at least 3 episodes). Films must be completed after January 1, 2022, and must have English subtitles or dubbing. Notification of selection is typically sent by November 30.

Projects in development are pitched directly to Chinese commissioning editors from state broadcasters and streaming platforms. Content restrictions: All films screened at GZDOC are subject to Chinese content regulations. Documentary content addressing politically sensitive topics may face exclusion. International filmmakers should assess their film's compatibility with Chinese censorship guidelines before submitting.

Festival History

GZDOC was established in 2003 and is hosted by the National Radio and Television Administration and the People's Government of Guangdong Province. The event is undertaken by the People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality and the Radio and Television Administration of Guangdong Province, with execution by the Guangzhou Culture, Radio, Television, and Tourism Bureau. Overall coordination is handled by Guangdong Global Raytur Film and Television Media Co., Ltd.

Over two decades, GZDOC has grown from a screening event into a comprehensive cultural and industry event. It is the only national-level documentary industrial event in China, and its pitching forum has become the largest documentary financing platform in Asia. The festival has played a direct role in connecting international documentary filmmakers with Chinese commissioning networks, and its market floor has facilitated distribution deals across Chinese broadcast, theatrical, and streaming platforms.
