Overview

The Just For Laughs Film Festival is the comedy-focused film program within the Just For Laughs festival, the world's largest comedy festival, held each July in Montreal. The 2025 edition ran July 16 to 27, and the 2026 edition is scheduled for July 15 to 26. Festival History

Just For Laughs was founded in 1982 by Gilbert Rozon as a two-day French-language comedy event in Montreal. English-language programming was added in 1985 under Andy Nulman, and the festival grew into the world's largest comedy gathering, presenting approximately 250 shows across two dozen venues. At its peak in 2016, the festival attracted 2.5 million attendees and generated an estimated $100 million for the Quebec economy.

The comedy film component, originally called Comedia, has been part of the festival since the early 2000s. In 2005, Comedia screened 125 short films from around the world alongside several feature-length films. The film program was rebranded and restructured multiple times over the years.

In October 2017, founder Gilbert Rozon resigned following allegations of sexual misconduct. The festival was subsequently acquired by ICM Partners and Howie Mandel in 2018. In March 2024, Just For Laughs filed for bankruptcy, canceling the 2024 edition. The company owed $22.5 million to creditors and had lost $800,000 in an email phishing scheme the previous year. The festival was acquired by Sylvain Parent-Bedard of ComediHa! later in 2024 and relaunched in 2025 with a restructured format.

The 2025 edition marked a new chapter for the film program, with the launch of JFL Shorts and JFL Pilots in partnership with Will Arnett's Electric Avenue. Submission Tips Specific to FIFCL

1. Comedy only. Films must be comedy in any form: pure, surreal, social, romantic, dramatic, burlesque, black, or musical. If your film is not a comedy, it is not eligible. This is the strictest genre requirement of any major European festival.
2. Strict length requirements. Feature films must be over 60 minutes. Short films must be 20 minutes or less. Films between 20 and 60 minutes are NOT eligible. This gap is unusual and excludes mid-length films entirely.
3. No prior broadcast or release. Films in competition must not have been broadcast, presented online, on television, or released on DVD, Blu-ray, or VOD. This is a strict premiere requirement that protects the festival's exclusivity.
4. Production date. Films must have been produced in the 12 months preceding the festival. The submission fee is EUR 10 (non-refundable if not selected). The deadline is typically September 9 for the November festival.
5. Submit via online link. An online link with password is required (Vimeo preferred). No physical media is accepted for initial submission. Ensure your link is reliable and remains active through the selection period.
