Cyprus International Film Festival

Overview

The Cyprus International Film Festival (also known as Cyprus Film Days) is Cyprus's most important film festival. Founded in 2005 and held annually in May and June in both Nicosia and Limassol, the festival presents international and Cypriot cinema in an island nation at the cultural crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Cyprus's unique geopolitical position -- divided between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities since 1974, with UN buffer zones running through the capital -- gives the festival a distinctive political context. Cinema has served as one of the few cultural activities that can bridge the island's division, and the festival has occasionally programmed events accessible to both communities.

The island's Mediterranean climate, archaeological heritage spanning thousands of years, and its complex modern history create an environment with particular resonance for documentary and politically engaged narrative filmmaking.
