ReelAbilities Film Festival

Overview

ReelAbilities Film Festival is the world's largest film festival dedicated to showcasing the lives, stories, and artistic expressions of people with disabilities. Founded in 2007 in New York City, the festival has grown into an independent nonprofit that operates a flagship New York edition plus a network of more than a dozen affiliate festivals across North America. The 18th annual New York edition ran April 23 to 30, 2026, presenting more than 35 films across 20 venues throughout New York, New Jersey, and online. The 19th edition is scheduled for April 8 to 14, 2027.

Every screening at ReelAbilities is fully accessible. The festival provides open captions for all films, audio description, ASL interpretation, and real-time captions (CART) for all talkbacks and conversations. This is not an add-on or an accommodation request system. Accessibility is built into the festival's exhibition standard. No other film festival in the world maintains this level of access across its entire program.

The festival prioritizes films made by disabled creators and films that include authentic representation from actors, writers, directors, and crew with lived experience of disability. Non-disabled filmmakers who engage seriously with disability themes are also eligible, but the programming direction has shifted increasingly toward disability-led work.

Eligibility requirements:

• Films must relate to the topic of disability. Eligible topics include autism, chronic illness, hearing loss and deafness, vision loss and blindness, intellectual disability, learning disability, memory loss, mental health, physical disability, speech and language disorders, PTSD, and other disabilities.
• Films that have been or plan to be widely or commercially released theatrically in the USA, or available on VOD or streaming for US viewers prior to May 2026, are not eligible for submission.
• Films from all countries are accepted. Narratives and documentaries are both eligible.
• The festival prioritizes films made by disabled creators and films featuring authentic representation from disabled actors, writers, directors, and crew.
• Screeners sent as links must remain available through April 2027.

ReelAbilities is the only major film festival where accessibility is the baseline, not an exception. For disabled filmmakers, the festival provides a dedicated platform, industry pipeline, and community that no other festival matches. The Pitch Programs (Crip Script and Rough Cut) offer tangible career support: cash awards, mentorship from organizations like ITVS and Women Make Movies, equipment access, and meetings with executives at companies like NBCUniversal.

For non-disabled filmmakers working on disability-themed projects, ReelAbilities connects films with disability communities and advocacy organizations. However, the festival's programming direction increasingly centers disability-led work. Filmmakers should review the eligibility requirements carefully and consider whether their film meets the festival's authenticity standards.

The Rotten Tomatoes Audience Award, introduced in 2026 in partnership with Rotten Tomatoes, invites in-person and virtual festivalgoers to vote for standout feature-length films. This is the first audience award mechanism of its kind at a disability-focused festival and expands the critical conversation around disability storytelling.

All screenings are free of charge to attendees, which means the festival's revenue model does not depend on ticket sales. Filmmakers should not expect screening fees, but the exposure to disability communities, industry professionals, and advocacy networks provides value that most ticketed festivals cannot match.

Major Awards

• ReelAbilities Rotten Tomatoes Audience Award - inaugural 2026 award for standout feature-length film, voted by in-person and virtual festivalgoers. The 2026 winner was Concerto for Other Hands, directed by Ernesto Gonzalez Diaz.
• ReelAbilities Spotlight Award - recognizes groundbreaking contributions to disability representation on stage and screen. The 2026 recipient was Tony Award-winning actor, author, and advocate Ali Stroker.
• Shine Global Children's Resilience in Disability Stories Award - $2,000 honorarium for films highlighting resilience and strength of children with disabilities. The 2026 winner was Sunna, written and directed by Radha Mehta.
• Rough-Cut Pitch Loreen Arbus Completion Award - $10,000 prize for a project in final stages of completion. The 2026 winner was The Dismantled by Jason DaSilva and Alice Elliott, which also received one year of Women Make Movies webinars, a private screening from Gigantic Studios, and a meeting with an NBCUniversal executive.
• Crip Script Awards - nonfiction and fiction track winners receive mentorship and industry access. 2026 nonfiction winner Blood Bias by Juliette Romeo received a DOC NYC PRO PASS. Liminal Space by Alicia Eastes received mentorship from ITVS.
• NYWIFT Partnership Award - additional recognition in partnership with New York Women in Film and Television

Festival History

ReelAbilities was founded in 2007 at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan. The festival began as a local New York event screening disability-themed films with accessibility features that no other festival provided. Over 18 years, it grew into the world's largest disability film festival and became an independent nonprofit organization, separating from its original JCC Manhattan institutional home.

The affiliate festival network expanded to more than a dozen cities across North America, each operating with the same accessibility standards as the New York flagship. The festival introduced the Industry Summit in 2022 to address systemic barriers to disability inclusion in entertainment. The Pitch Programs (Crip Script and Rough Cut) were added to create a pipeline for disabled writers, directors, and producers.

The 2026 festival (18th edition) opened with the East Coast premiere of Lone Wolves, Ryan Cunningham's romantic dramedy about autism, fertility, friendship, and mental health, at The New School's Tishman Auditorium. The festival screened over 35 films across 20 venues in New York and New Jersey, with 100% of screenings fully accessible. The 2026 edition also marked the inauguration of the Rotten Tomatoes Audience Award partnership.
