Global Film Festival Dominican Republic (GFFDR)
The Dominican Republic's most important international film festival, held annually in Santo Domingo, presenting Caribbean and international cinema and supporting the growth of filmmaking in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.
Overview
The Global Film Festival Dominican Republic (GFFDR) is the Dominican Republic's most important international film festival. Founded in 2007 and held annually in Santo Domingo, the oldest European-founded city in the Americas, the festival presents Caribbean and international cinema and serves as the most important film platform in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.
The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, and the festival reflects this Caribbean context alongside the country's Spanish colonial heritage. Santo Domingo's extraordinary Old Town, with its 16th-century colonial architecture and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, creates a historically resonant festival setting.
The Caribbean film community is small but creatively active, and the festival serves as a platform connecting Dominican, Caribbean, and Latin American filmmakers.
