Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (POFF)
The largest film festival in northern Europe, held annually in November in Tallinn, Estonia, with competitive programming across multiple sections and a significant industry program connecting Baltic and Nordic filmmakers with international partners.
Overview
The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (POFF, from the Estonian Pimedate Oode Filmifestival) is the largest film festival in northern Europe. Founded in 1997 and held annually in November in Tallinn, Estonia's medieval capital, the festival holds FIAPF Competitive accreditation and presents competitive programming across multiple sections alongside an active industry program.
Black Nights has grown from a small Baltic event into one of Europe's most comprehensive film festivals, screening over 200 films from more than 60 countries each year. The festival's November timing, in the depths of the Baltic autumn, creates the "black nights" atmosphere that gives it its evocative name and its distinctive character.
Estonia's extraordinary digital society -- the country has been called the world's most advanced digital nation -- gives the festival a technologically sophisticated context, and Black Nights has been a pioneer in integrating digital and online screening alongside its physical program.
