Addis International Film Festival (AIFF)

Overview

The Addis International Film Festival (AIFF) is Ethiopia's most important international film festival. Founded in 2012 and held annually in September in Addis Ababa, the festival celebrates Ethiopian cinema and East African filmmaking alongside a curated international program. Addis Ababa's status as the headquarters of the African Union gives the festival a pan-African diplomatic context unique among African festivals.

Ethiopia has a modest but growing film industry, with Ethiopian filmmakers beginning to gain recognition at international festivals. The diaspora dimension is important: there are large Ethiopian communities in the United States (particularly Washington DC), Europe, and the Gulf, and films by diaspora Ethiopians are central to the festival's programming.
