Overview

The Budapest International Documentary Festival (BIDF) is Hungary's most important documentary festival. Founded in 2007 and held annually in Budapest, the festival presents competitive international and Central European documentary cinema in one of Europe's most architecturally spectacular capitals.

Budapest's extraordinary cultural heritage -- its Art Nouveau buildings, its Ottoman-era thermal baths, its Baroque Buda castle and Gothic Matthias Church, and the dramatic Danube panorama that separates Buda and Pest -- creates a festival setting of exceptional visual richness. The city's history as the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, its experience of both Nazi and Soviet occupation, and its dramatic post-communist transition give it unusual historical depth.

Hungary's film tradition includes internationally acclaimed directors, and the festival celebrates both Hungarian documentary and the broader Central European documentary tradition.
