Gothenburg Film Festival
Scandinavia's largest film festival, held annually in January-February in Gothenburg, presenting competitive Scandinavian and international cinema with a particularly strong program of Nordic cinema and a famous dedication to extreme screening experiences.
Overview
The Gothenburg Film Festival is Scandinavia's largest film festival. Founded in 1979 and held annually in January and February in Gothenburg, Sweden's second-largest city, the festival presents competitive Scandinavian and international cinema with particular strength in Nordic cinema programming and a unique dedication to extreme screening experiences.
The festival is famous for its Cinema Isolated event -- in which a single viewer is placed alone in a lighthouse or other remote location with 168 hours of Gothenburg Film Festival programming and no contact with the outside world. This theatrical experiment has attracted international attention and embodies the festival's commitment to thinking radically about the cinema experience.
Gothenburg's industrial heritage as Sweden's shipbuilding center and its contemporary identity as a progressive, creative city with one of Scandinavia's most vibrant arts scenes create a festival environment that is simultaneously serious and playful.
