Overview

Visions du Reel is a documentary-only festival held annually in April in Nyon, a small Swiss city on the shores of Lake Geneva between Geneva and Lausanne. The 57th edition takes place April 17 to 26, 2026. The festival programs competitive international documentary cinema with a 55-year history of championing formally adventurous and politically engaged nonfiction. It is not FIAPF-accredited, but it is one of the most respected documentary festivals in Europe, alongside IDFA (Amsterdam) and DOK Leipzig.

The festival accepts open submissions from filmmakers worldwide. Competition films must be world, international, or European premieres. The festival defines "creative documentary" broadly, accepting essay films, hybrid nonfiction, and formally experimental work that pushes the boundaries of what documentary cinema can be.

The industry component, VdR-Industry, runs April 19 to 22, 2026 and awards over CHF 80,000 in cash and in-kind prizes to documentary projects in development, post-production, and rough-cut stages. In 2026, VdR-Industry selected 31 projects from more than 600 submissions, with 61% directed by women, 45% by first-time feature directors, and 58% from filmmakers in the majority world.

Submission Details

Visions du Reel accepts submissions through its online submission form. Key details for the 57th edition (2026):

Submission fees are charged per film and are non-refundable even if the film is not selected. Filmmakers from countries on the SDC eligibility list can request a fee waiver by contacting industry@visionsdureel.ch. Screeners must be password-protected links valid through the end of March 2026, with download capability for the selection committee. Films must be in their original language with English subtitles (and French if available).

Feature films are defined as over 60 minutes, medium-length films between 31 and 60 minutes, and short films up to 30 minutes.

Premiere Status Requirements

All competition films must be world, international, or European premieres. The festival does not specify a strict hierarchy between these premiere levels, but world premieres are prioritized in selection. Films that have had extensive public screenings or online availability may be at a disadvantage.

Competition Sections

• International Feature Competition - feature-length documentaries (60+ min) competing for jury prizes. The top award is the Grand Prix
• Regards Neufs - first and second documentary features by emerging filmmakers, recognizing new voices in nonfiction cinema
• Burning Lights - formally experimental and hybrid documentary work that pushes boundaries of the form
• Short Film Competition - documentary short films up to 30 minutes
• Medium-Length Films - documentaries between 31 and 60 minutes, a category most festivals do not separately program

Non-competitive sections include retrospectives, special screenings, and thematic programs curated by the artistic director.

VdR-Industry Program

VdR-Industry is the festival's professional market and runs four days during the festival. It is not a film market in the traditional sense (like Marche du Film or EFM) but rather a project development and financing platform for documentary works in progress. The program accepts submissions for four activities:

• VdR-Pitching - 15 projects in late development seeking financing. A competitive co-production forum where filmmakers pitch to international decision-makers including funders, broadcasters, sales agents, and distributors
• VdR-Work in Progress - 6 projects near completion seeking festival partners, distributors, sales agents, or finishing funds. Selected projects pay a CHF 300 participation fee upon confirmation
• VdR-Rough Cut Lab - 4 projects in the rough cut stage receiving mentorship from experienced editors and industry professionals during a multi-day workshop
• VdR-Development Lab - a 9-month mentorship program for directors and producers, supporting project development and facilitating access to the international market. No fee to apply

VdR-Industry Awards (2026)

The 2026 VdR-Industry awarded over CHF 80,000 in cash and in-kind prizes:

• Eurimages Co-production Development Award - EUR 20,000 cash, awarded to promote international co-production from the initial project stage
• visions sud est Award - CHF 10,000 cash to the best project from the South (Africa, Latin America, Asia) or Eastern Europe
• RTS Award - EUR 10,000 pre-buy from Swiss broadcaster RTS for one project pitched at VdR-Pitching
• Lightdox Award - EUR 3,000 cash for the project with highest international potential at VdR-Pitching
• The Party Film Sales Award - EUR 3,000 cash for the project with highest international potential at VdR-Work in Progress
• IDA Documentary Culture Award - $2,000 USD cash plus two passes to Getting Real '26
• Unifrance Doc Award - subtitle creation (value EUR 2,300) plus Unifrance membership (value EUR 1,590) for the French producer attached to a project
• Masé Studios & Color Grade Award - DCP package creation and Atmos Cinema auditorium screening
• Cannes Docs Award - invitation to feature as a Cannes Docs Spotlighted Project, including two Marche du Film badges
• DOK Leipzig Award - two accreditations and four nights accommodation at DOK Leipzig plus observer access to the DOK Co-Pro Market
• AIDC Award - two accreditations to the Australian International Documentary Conference plus a fee waiver for The FACTory
• No Nation Films Fellowship Award - six-month fellowship with mentorship for documentary teams facing challenges or in vulnerable circumstances

Festival History

Visions du Reel was founded in 1969 as a documentary film festival in Nyon. The festival grew out of the Swiss documentary tradition and the broader European creative documentary movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Over five decades, it has consistently programmed documentary work that prioritizes formal innovation over conventional reportage, building a reputation as a festival where essay films, hybrid nonfiction, and politically engaged documentaries find audiences.

The VdR-Industry program was launched in 2003 and has grown into one of the most important documentary co-production and financing platforms in Europe. The 2026 edition was the first under the direction of Sabine Fayoux Cantillo as Head of Industry. Oscar-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras opened the 2026 Industry Days with a conversation about documentary practice.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Visions du Reel is a documentary-only festival. If your film is a narrative fiction feature, it is not eligible. The festival is specifically receptive to formally ambitious documentary that takes risks with form, structure, and the relationship between filmmaker and subject. Conventional reportage or journalistic documentaries are less likely to be selected than creative nonfiction, essay films, and hybrid works.

The submission fee (CHF 30 to 40, approximately $34 to $45 USD) is lower than most A-list festivals. If you are a filmmaker from a developing country, request a fee waiver before submitting. The festival does not refund fees for ineligible submissions, so verify your film meets the premiere and format requirements before paying.

For documentary filmmakers seeking financing, the VdR-Industry program is one of the most targeted platforms in Europe. The Eurimages Co-production Development Award (EUR 20,000) and the visions sud est Award (CHF 10,000) are among the largest development prizes available for documentary projects. If your project is in late development, apply to VdR-Pitching. If you have a rough cut, apply to the Rough Cut Lab. If you are near completion, apply to VdR-Work in Progress. Each activity has different eligibility criteria and expects different levels of completion.

The festival does not have an attached film market for finished film sales. If your goal is selling a completed documentary to distributors, you should also consider IDFA (Amsterdam), DOK Leipzig, or Cannes Docs alongside Visions du Reel.
