Overview

Visions du Reel is one of Europe's most important documentary festivals. Founded in 1969 and held annually in April in Nyon -- a small Swiss city on the shores of Lake Geneva, between Geneva and Lausanne -- the festival presents competitive international documentary cinema with a fifty-year reputation for championing formally adventurous and politically engaged nonfiction.

Nyon's idyllic Lake Geneva setting -- the Jura Mountains rising behind the town, the Alps visible across the lake, the medieval castle overlooking the lake shore -- creates an extraordinary contrast with the often urgent, politically charged documentary programming. This contrast between beauty and urgency has become part of the festival's identity.

The festival has consistently been ahead of trends in documentary filmmaking, championing creative documentary, essay film, and hybrid nonfiction at the forefront of each new wave of formal innovation.
