Overview

The Istanbul International Film Festival is Turkey's most important film festival. Founded in 1982 and held annually in April in Istanbul, the festival is FIAPF-accredited and presents competitive international and Turkish cinema in the world's only city that spans two continents.

Istanbul's extraordinary geographical and cultural position -- straddling Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait, with a history that encompasses the Byzantine and Ottoman empires -- creates a festival context of singular historical and cultural richness. The festival has consistently programmed films that explore the intersection of Eastern and Western cultural traditions alongside its competitive programming.

Turkish cinema has produced internationally acclaimed directors including Nuri Bilge Ceylan, whose three Cannes prizes including the Palme d'Or (Winter Sleep, 2014) have brought global attention to Turkish filmmaking. Istanbul provides the most important domestic platform for this tradition.
