Festival History

Film Festival Cologne was founded in 1991 as the Cologne Conference. The festival emerged during the expansion of Germany's television and media industry in the early 1990s, when Cologne was consolidating its position as the country's broadcast production center. The festival has operated continuously since its founding, reaching its 35th edition in 2025 and its 36th in 2026.

The festival rebranded from "Cologne Conference" to "Film Festival Cologne" (FFCGN) to reflect its expanded scope beyond television to include theatrical features, documentaries, and streaming content. The NRW Competition was added to highlight productions from North Rhine-Westphalia, which has become one of Germany's most productive film and television regions.
