Overview

The Budapest International Documentary Festival (BIDF) is Hungary's premier documentary film festival. Founded in 2009 and held annually in February in Budapest, the festival presents competitive international and Hungarian documentary cinema over approximately five days.

Budapest's cultural identity -- as a Central European capital with a strong intellectual and artistic tradition, shaped by its complex history under Habsburg rule, communism, and post-Soviet transition -- creates an unusually engaged audience for documentary work. The festival reflects Hungary's serious approach to cinema as a cultural and political medium.

Hungary has a distinguished documentary tradition, with Hungarian documentary filmmakers regularly competing at IDFA and other major international events. BIDF provides the most important domestic platform for this tradition.

Key Sections

  • International Competition -- documentaries competing for jury prizes
  • Hungarian Documentary Competition -- new Hungarian nonfiction
  • Special Programs -- thematic selections and retrospectives
  • Industry Events -- professional development for Hungarian documentarians

What Filmmakers Should Know

BIDF accepts open submissions. For Hungarian documentary filmmakers, this is the most important domestic platform. For international filmmakers, Budapest provides access to Central European audiences and the Hungarian state broadcasting system, which is an active documentary commissioner.

Major Awards

  • Best International Documentary -- jury prize
  • Best Hungarian Documentary
  • Audience Award
  • Special Jury Prize

Festival History
