International Film Festival of India (IFFI)

India's oldest and most prestigious international film festival, held annually in November in Goa, recognized by FIAPF as the premier competitive film event in South Asia.

Overview

The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is India's oldest and most prestigious international film festival and the only FIAPF-accredited competitive festival in South Asia. Founded in 1952, IFFI has been held annually in Goa since 2004 and runs for approximately nine days in November. The festival screens over 200 films from around the world and attracts industry professionals from across the Indian subcontinent and internationally.

India is one of the world's largest film-producing nations, releasing more films annually than any other country. IFFI serves as the most important international platform within this vast film culture, providing recognition for Indian filmmakers while also connecting Indian audiences and industry with global cinema.

The Golden Peacock Award for Best Film is the festival's top prize. IFFI's FIAPF accreditation positions it among the world's recognized competitive festivals, and winning or competing at IFFI carries meaningful prestige within the Indian film industry and its global diaspora.

Key Sections

  • International Competition -- films competing for the Golden Peacock Award
  • Indian Panorama -- a curated selection of the year's best Indian films
  • World Panorama -- a broad survey of international cinema
  • Retrospectives -- programs honoring filmmakers and national cinemas
  • Special Screenings -- high-profile premieres and events

What Filmmakers Should Know

IFFI accepts submissions for its competition and sidebar sections. The Indian Panorama section is the most important annual curated survey of Indian cinema, and inclusion carries significant prestige within the domestic industry. International filmmakers benefit from exposure to India's enormous film market, the world's most prolific in terms of production volume.

Film Bazaar, operated by the National Film Development Corporation of India alongside IFFI, is a structured co-production market focused on South Asian cinema. The Bazaar includes a Work in Progress lab, a Co-Production Market, and a Screenwriters Lab, making it one of the most comprehensive industry platforms for South Asian film professionals.

Festival History

IFFI was founded in 1952 in Mumbai and has moved locations several times before finding its permanent home in Goa in 2004. The Goa location provides a scenic coastal setting and has helped the festival build a distinctive identity separate from India's major film industry centers of Mumbai and Chennai.
