Overview

The Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes) is South India's most important international film festival. Founded in 2008 and held annually in February in Bengaluru, India's technology capital and one of Asia's most rapidly growing cities, the festival presents competitive world cinema and South Indian films to an educated, internationally connected urban audience.

Bengaluru's identity as India's Silicon Valley -- home to hundreds of global technology companies and a large population of highly educated, internationally mobile professionals -- creates an audience for world cinema that is unusually sophisticated and globally aware. The festival reflects this character by programming diverse international cinema alongside the major traditions of South Indian filmmaking (Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam).

The South Indian film industry, collectively among the world's largest by output, is centered in Chennai and Hyderabad, but BIFFes provides Bengaluru with an internationally oriented platform that engages seriously with both world cinema and the regional tradition.

Key Sections

  • International Competition -- world films competing for jury prizes
  • South Indian Cinema -- new Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films
  • Indian Documentary -- nonfiction from across India
  • Short Film Competition -- Indian and international short programs
  • Retrospectives -- programs honoring major filmmakers

What Filmmakers Should Know

BIFFes accepts open submissions. For Kannada-language filmmakers, this is the most important domestic platform. For South Indian filmmakers more broadly, the festival provides a Bengaluru platform distinct from Chennai and Hyderabad-based events. For international filmmakers, Bengaluru's tech-educated audience creates exceptional engagement with complex or innovative films.
