Overview

Balinale (Bali International Film Festival) is Indonesia's first and only Academy Award-qualifying film festival. The 19th edition runs June 1-7, 2026 at Icon Bali Mall and Cinema XXI in Bali, with additional screenings at selected locations across the island. Balinale accepts feature films (40-120 minutes) and short films (under 40 minutes) across narrative, documentary, and animation categories via FilmFreeway, with tiered submission fees from $25 to $65 USD and free waivers for Indonesian citizens (WNI).

In 2024, Balinale received official Academy Award-qualifying status. Winners of the Balinale Short Film Competition in all three short film categories (Live Action, Documentary, and Animation) are eligible to submit for Oscar consideration. This makes Balinale the only festival in Indonesia where a short film win can qualify it for Academy Award submission.

The 18th edition in 2025 received 1,500+ submissions and selected 72 films from 32 countries, including 8 World Premieres, 25 Asian Premieres, and 16 International Premieres, with 23 Indonesian films in the program. The festival opened with "Flow" (Latvia), the 2025 Academy Award-winning feature animation directed by Gints Zilbalodis. The closing night featured the first 3D IMAX screening ever held in Bali, with "Under the Sea" and "Born to Be Wild," both IMAX films shot in Indonesia.

Submission Process and Fees

Balinale accepts submissions exclusively via FilmFreeway. Submissions for the 19th edition (June 2026) open October 15, 2025.

Academy Award Qualifying Status

Balinale is approved by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the Short Film competition in all three Oscar short film categories:

• Best Live Action Short Film
• Best Documentary Short Film
• Best Animated Short Film

Winning the Balinale Short Film Competition in any of these categories makes a short film eligible to submit for Academy Award consideration. Being selected for the festival is not sufficient; the film must win the qualifying award. Balinale is the first and only festival in Indonesia with this status.

For the 99th Academy Awards, short films that win a qualifying festival award between October 1, 2025 and September 30, 2026 must submit all required materials by the deadlines published on oscars.org.

What Filmmakers Should Know

For short filmmakers seeking Oscar qualification: Balinale is the only festival in Indonesia where winning a short film award qualifies your film for Academy Award submission. All three short film categories (Live Action, Documentary, Animation) are qualifying categories. If you win, the festival provides an official qualification letter. You must then submit your film to the Academy by the published deadline (August 13, 2026 for films qualifying between October 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026). Festival History

Balinale was established in 2007 by the Bali Taksu Foundation. The festival was created to invite foreign filmmakers to screen their films while experiencing Indonesia's culture and locations, and to give Indonesian filmmakers a platform to present their work to international audiences. The festival has run for 18 editions, reaching its 19th edition in June 2026.

The festival has grown from a small regional event into an internationally recognized festival. In 2024, Balinale received Academy Award-qualifying status, making it the first and only festival in Indonesia with this designation. The 2025 edition (18th) was officiated by Fadli Zon, Indonesia's Minister of Culture, and featured the first 3D IMAX screening in Bali.

The festival is held at Icon Bali Mall with screenings at Cinema XXI and other selected locations. The Open-Air Cinema (Layar Tancap) program brings free outdoor screenings to the local community, including Balinese and Indonesian films.
