Fajr International Film Festival
Iran's most important film festival, held annually in February in Tehran, serving as the primary platform for Iranian cinema and a showcase for films from the Islamic world and beyond.
Overview
The Fajr International Film Festival is Iran's most important film festival and the primary platform for Iranian cinema globally. Founded in 1982, the festival takes place annually in February in Tehran and serves as the national showcase for Iranian filmmaking alongside an international program from the Islamic world and beyond.
Iran has one of the world's most artistically distinguished film traditions. Directors including Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Jafar Panahi, Asghar Farhadi, and many others have produced films that have won major prizes at Cannes, Venice, Berlin, and other leading festivals and received Academy Award nominations. The Fajr Festival is where Iranian cinema celebrates its own achievements.
The festival operates within Iran's regulatory framework for cinema, which shapes what films can be shown and produced. International filmmakers should research current Iranian cultural regulations before planning submissions. Despite these constraints, Fajr provides genuine access to Iranian cinema culture and the Iranian film industry.
