Overview

The Galway Film Fleadh is Ireland's primary independent film festival and the country's most significant platform for Irish cinema outside Dublin. The 38th edition ran July 7 to 12, 2026, screening Irish and international independent cinema across six days at the Town Hall Theatre and surrounding venues in Galway. The 2026 edition recorded the highest attendance in the festival's history across both the public programme and the industry strand, the Galway Film Fair.

The Fleadh is an Academy Awards qualifying festival in three short film categories: Live Action, Short Documentary, and Animation. Winners in these categories automatically qualify for Oscar consideration without the standard theatrical run, provided the film meets all Academy requirements. Submission Details

All feature and short film submissions are managed through FilmFreeway. The 2026 submission fees and deadlines were:

Feature films must be 52 minutes or longer. Short films must be under 40 minutes. All genres are accepted: narrative, documentary, animation, and experimental. Non-English language films must include English subtitles. The festival gives priority to World, European, and Irish premieres. Films that have previously screened publicly in Ireland are eligible for out-of-competition screening only. Shorts that have been broadcast on television, streamed online, or made available on VOD are ineligible for competition.

Galway Film Fair

The Galway Film Fair is the industry component of the festival and has grown into one of Ireland's most important film industry events. The 2026 Fair welcomed its largest-ever number of producers, financiers, sales agents, distributors, broadcasters, and marketplace delegates. The Fair's Marketplace connects Irish and international producers with financing partners, sales agents, and distributors. The pitching competition awards cash and service prizes to projects in development. The Fair runs concurrently with the festival programme.

Festival History

The Galway Film Fleadh was founded in 1989 and has operated continuously for 37 editions. The word "Fleadh" (pronounced "fla") is an Irish-language word for festival or gathering. The festival established itself as the primary platform for Irish independent cinema outside Dublin, with a particular focus on Irish-language filmmaking and emerging Irish talent. The Galway Film Fair was added as the festival's industry strand and has grown into a significant European marketplace for independent film financing.

The festival has been supported by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaion and Screen Ireland / Fis Eireann throughout its history. Festival Director Miriam Allen led the 2026 edition. The 39th Galway Film Fleadh will take place in July 2027.
