Overview

The Jerusalem Film Festival is Israel's most important film festival. Founded in 1984 and held annually in July in Jerusalem, the festival presents approximately 200 films from around the world over 10 days and serves as the primary platform for Israeli cinema alongside a curated international program.

Jerusalem provides one of the most historically and spiritually charged festival settings in the world. The city's extraordinary archaeological and architectural heritage, its complex status as a contested capital, and its significance to three major world religions give the festival a context unlike any other. Screenings take place at the Cinematheque and Sultan's Pool, a spectacular outdoor venue beneath the ancient city walls.

Israel has a distinguished film tradition that has produced internationally acclaimed directors including Amos Gitai, Joseph Cedar, and Nadav Lapid. The Jerusalem festival is where Israeli cinema celebrates its achievements and where the country's complex relationship with its own history and present is examined through the cinematic lens.
