Overview

The Almaty International Film Festival is Kazakhstan's most important film festival. Founded in 2015 and held annually in September in Almaty, the festival celebrates Kazakh and Central Asian cinema alongside international programming. Kazakhstan has one of the most developed film industries in Central Asia, supported by the country's oil wealth and its ambition to develop a sustainable cultural economy.

Kazakh cinema has a distinguished tradition rooted in the "Kazakh New Wave" of the late Soviet period, which produced internationally acclaimed directors including Rashid Nugmanov and Sergei Bodrov. Contemporary Kazakh cinema continues this tradition with new directors addressing the country's post-Soviet transformation and its complex cultural identity at the crossroads of Russian, Turkic, Chinese, and nomadic influences.

The festival takes place in Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city and cultural capital, rather than the new capital Nur-Sultan (Astana), reflecting the city's established cultural infrastructure.
