Overview

The Bishkek International Film Festival is Kyrgyzstan's most important film festival. Founded in 2012 and held in Bishkek, the country's capital at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains, the festival celebrates Kyrgyz and Central Asian cinema in one of the most geographically spectacular nations in the world.

Kyrgyzstan has a modest but artistically interesting film tradition rooted in Soviet-era production, with Kyrgyz films occasionally achieving international recognition. The country's nomadic heritage, its stunning mountain landscape, and its position at the crossroads of Chinese, Russian, and Turkic influences create a distinctive cultural foundation for cinema.

The festival serves both as a domestic showcase for Kyrgyz filmmaking and as a platform for Central Asian cinema more broadly, creating connections across the region.

Key Sections

  • Kyrgyz Film Competition -- new Kyrgyz features and shorts
  • Central Asian Panorama -- films from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan
  • International Program -- curated international films
