Muscat International Film Festival

Oman's most important film festival, held annually in Muscat, presenting international and Arab cinema in one of the Arabian Peninsula's most culturally open and historically significant capitals.

Overview

The Muscat International Film Festival is Oman's most important film festival. Founded in 2014 and held annually in Muscat, Oman's capital, the festival presents international and Arab cinema in one of the Arabian Peninsula's most culturally open and historically significant nations.

Oman's distinctive cultural identity -- shaped by its maritime trading history, its connection to the Silk Route, its Portuguese and East African colonial encounters, and its particular approach to Islamic practice that has historically been more tolerant than neighboring Gulf states -- gives the festival a cultural context that is both distinctly Gulf Arab and unusually open to international perspectives.

Muscat's beautiful setting between the Hajar Mountains and the Arabian Sea, with its white-washed buildings and its historic Sultan Qaboos-era development, creates a festival environment of quiet elegance.
