Overview

The Herceg Novi Film Festival is Montenegro's most important film festival. Founded in 1994 in Herceg Novi, a fortified town on the Bay of Kotor at the entrance to the Adriatic, the festival presents Montenegrin and regional cinema in one of the Mediterranean world's most extraordinary settings.

Herceg Novi's walled old town, its position overlooking the Bay of Kotor, and its backdrop of dramatic mountains create a festival environment of rare beauty. The August timing places the festival in the height of the Mediterranean summer, with outdoor screenings against spectacular natural scenery.

Montenegro became independent in 2006, and the festival has evolved from its Yugoslav-era origins into a national platform for Montenegrin cinema alongside a Balkan and regional program.
