Dockanema -- Mozambique Documentary Film Festival
Mozambique's most important documentary film festival, held annually in Maputo, presenting Mozambican and international documentary cinema and supporting the development of filmmaking in Mozambique.
Overview
Dockanema is Mozambique's most important documentary film festival. Founded in 2006 and held annually in Maputo, the country's capital and largest city, the festival presents Mozambican and international documentary cinema and supports the development of filmmaking in one of sub-Saharan Africa's Portuguese-speaking nations.
Mozambique has a modest but growing film culture, with documentary filmmaking serving as the primary form of production given the costs involved in narrative feature production. Dockanema provides the most important domestic platform for this work and connects Mozambican filmmakers with international documentary networks.
The festival's Lusophone dimension -- connecting Mozambique to Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome, Brazil, and Portugal through shared language -- is a distinctive feature that gives it programming breadth within Portuguese-language world cinema.
