Oslo International Film Festival (Films from the South)
Norway's most internationally focused film festival, held annually in October in Oslo, dedicated to cinema from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East -- regions underrepresented in Norwegian film culture.
Overview
Oslo's Films from the South (Filmfra Sor) is Norway's most internationally focused film festival, dedicated exclusively to cinema from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Founded in 1991 and held annually in October in Oslo, the festival screens approximately 60 to 70 films over 10 days and provides Norwegian audiences with their primary access to cinema from the Global South.
The festival's programming philosophy is built around geographic justice: the regions whose films are shown at Films from the South represent the majority of the world's population but receive a tiny fraction of Norwegian cinema screen time. By dedicating an entire festival to these regions, the event provides meaningful exposure and builds audience relationships that support Nordic distribution of global cinema.
The festival does not operate a competitive program but presents its curation as an act of advocacy for the world's underrepresented cinemas. Programming is curated from the year's festival circuit by programmers with deep expertise in the relevant regions.

What Filmmakers Should Know
Films from the South programs through curatorial relationships with sales agents, distributors, and festival programmers. The festival does not accept open submissions in the conventional sense.
For filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, a selection at Films from the South provides exposure to Norwegian audiences and the Nordic distribution market, which has historically been receptive to world cinema.
Festival History
Films from the South was founded in 1991 with a deliberate mission of expanding Norwegian cinema culture beyond European and American perspectives. The festival has maintained this mission consistently for over three decades.
