Festival Internacional de Cine de Asuncion (FICA Paraguay)
Paraguay's most important film festival, held annually in Asuncion, presenting Paraguayan and Latin American cinema in one of South America's most overlooked but culturally distinctive nations.
Overview
The Festival Internacional de Cine de Asuncion is Paraguay's most important film festival. Founded in 2006 and held annually in Asuncion, Paraguay's capital and largest city, the festival presents Paraguayan and Latin American cinema in one of South America's most culturally overlooked nations.
Paraguay is one of only two landlocked countries in South America and has one of the most distinctive cultural identities on the continent. The country is bilingual in Spanish and Guarani -- one of the few Indigenous languages to survive as a living majority language in the Americas. This bilingual, bicultural identity is reflected in Paraguayan cinema, which engages with both the European colonial heritage and the Indigenous Guarani tradition.
Paraguayan cinema is small but distinctive, and the festival provides the most important domestic platform for this emerging creative community.
