T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival (Nowe Horyzonty)
Poland's most artistically adventurous film festival, held annually in July in Wroclaw, dedicated to formally innovative and challenging world cinema presented to enthusiastic Polish art house audiences.
Overview
Nowe Horyzonty (New Horizons) International Film Festival is Poland's most artistically adventurous film festival. Founded in 2001 and held annually in July in Wroclaw, one of Poland's most culturally vibrant cities, the festival presents formally innovative and challenging world cinema to enthusiastic Polish art house audiences.
The festival's programming philosophy is explicitly oriented toward cinema that challenges conventional form and expands the boundaries of the medium. Nowe Horyzonty has been the most important platform in Poland for introducing challenging world cinema to Polish audiences, programming directors including Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Pedro Costa, and Miguel Gomes well before they achieved widespread recognition.
Wroclaw's identity as a historically German city (known as Breslau before 1945) that became a Polish center of arts and culture gives it a distinctive character. The city's European Capital of Culture 2016 status reflects its cultural ambition, and Nowe Horyzonty is central to that identity.
