Overview

IndieLisboa is Lisbon's leading independent film festival. The 23rd edition will take place April 30 to May 10, 2026. The festival programs formally adventurous and politically engaged cinema from Portugal and around the world, with a clear preference for films unreleased in Portugal. Submissions are accepted exclusively through FilmFreeway.

The festival has 6 competitive sections and 4 non-competitive sections. The International Competition is restricted to first, second, or third works by emerging filmmakers, making IndieLisboa a primary discovery festival for new talent. The Grand Prize for best feature film carries a cash award of 15,000 EUR. The Short Film Grand Prize carries 4,000 EUR. The Amnesty International Award carries 1,500 EUR.

IndieLisboa is not an Academy Award-qualifying festival. The festival has no attached film market. Its value for filmmakers lies in European press exposure, Portuguese and Lusophone audience access, and positioning within the European independent festival circuit alongside festivals like Locarno, Karlovy Vary, and Rotterdam.

• International Competition - shorts (up to 59 min) and features (60+ min) of fiction, animation, documentary, or experimental work. Restricted to first, second, or third works (excluding school films). Must be produced in 2025 or 2026. Must have first public presentation in Portugal at this festival.
• National Competition - shorts and features produced in Portugal or by artists with permanent residence in Portugal. Must be produced in 2025 or 2026. Preferably world or national premiere.
• Silvester - shorts and features by filmmakers with more than 3 films in their career. For works that reject established formulas and explore new languages. Must be produced in 2025 or 2026. Must have first public presentation in Portugal at this festival.
• Brand New - discovery section for new talent in Portugal: film students, self-taught filmmakers, or people from other areas emerging into cinema.
• IndieMusic - mostly documentaries about music and the people who make it.
• Smart7 - a competition born from a cooperation alliance between 7 festivals from 7 European countries, with a selection of 7 films representing all member countries.

Non-Competitive Sections

• IndieJunior - films for children and youth audiences (6 months to 15 years old). Animation, fiction, and documentary.
• Director's Cut - restored cinema classics, masterpieces, and obscure gems.
• Mouth of Madness - films that defy rules and push boundaries in festive demonstrations of defiance.
• Rhizome - works highlighting current issues, renowned filmmakers, and previews. A program that mobilizes the festival community around cinema as entertainment, reflection, and debate.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Submission Fees and Deadlines

All submissions are made through FilmFreeway. The fee structure for the 23rd edition (2026):

National submissions (Portuguese films) are free during the Early Bird deadline. International feature films are only accepted during the Late deadline if completed after November 1, 2025.

Eligibility Requirements

• International Competition: First, second, or third works only (excluding school films). Shorts up to 59 minutes or features 60+ minutes. Fiction, animation, documentary, or experimental. Produced in 2025 or 2026. First public presentation in Portugal.
• Silvester Competition: Fourth work or later (excluding school films). Same format and production year requirements. First public presentation in Portugal.
• National Competition: Produced in Portugal or by artists with permanent residence in Portugal. Produced in 2025 or 2026. First public presentation in Portugal.
• IndieJunior: Shorts up to 59 minutes. Produced in 2025 or 2026. Must be registered in the IndieJunior category on FilmFreeway. First public presentation in Lisbon at this festival.

Premiere Requirements

All competitive sections require that the film has not been previously publicly presented in Portugal. The festival gives preference to films unreleased in Portugal. There is no world premiere requirement for the International Competition or Silvester sections, only a Portuguese premiere requirement. The National Competition prefers world or national premieres.

Strategic Considerations

IndieLisboa's International Competition is restricted to first, second, or third works. This makes it a discovery festival rather than a general submission target. Filmmakers with 4 or more films in their career should submit to the Silvester Competition instead. The festival's programming leans toward formally adventurous work, political engagement, and cinema from underrepresented regions, particularly Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

For Portuguese and Lusophone filmmakers, the National Competition provides the most direct platform. The festival's Lisbon location and Portugal's colonial history give it particular relevance for films from Portuguese-speaking countries (Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe).

Festival History

IndieLisboa was founded in 2004 and has grown into Portugal's most important platform for independent and art house cinema. The festival was created to fill a gap in Lisbon's cultural landscape: while DocLisboa (founded 2002) addressed documentary cinema, no Lisbon festival focused on independent fiction and formally adventurous work from emerging international filmmakers.

The festival has developed a distinctive programming identity over two decades, favoring films that challenge conventional narrative or documentary forms, politically engaged work, and cinema from regions underrepresented in mainstream festival circuits. The International Competition's restriction to first, second, and third works has made IndieLisboa a recognized discovery festival on the European circuit, comparable in function to Locarno's Pardi di domani or Karlovy Vary's competition sections.

The 23rd edition (April 30 to May 10, 2026) runs for 11 days, maintaining the festival's traditional spring scheduling that places it after the major winter festivals (Berlin, Rotterdam) and before Cannes.
