Overview

IndieLisboa is Lisbon's leading independent film festival, held annually in late April and May over approximately 10 days. Founded in 2004, the festival has established itself as Portugal's most important platform for formally adventurous and politically engaged cinema, complementing the more documentary-focused DocLisboa that takes place each October.

IndieLisboa programs with a clear aesthetic sensibility that favors films challenging conventional narrative or documentary forms, politically engaged work, and cinema from regions underrepresented in mainstream festival circuits. The festival has been particularly strong in programming from Latin America, Africa, and Asia alongside European and Portuguese work.

Lisbon's cultural environment, with its history of colonial connections to Africa, Latin America, and Asia, gives IndieLisboa a particular resonance for films from the Portuguese-speaking world and from regions connected to Portugal's history.
