Festival de Malaga -- Spanish Film Festival
Spain's most important festival dedicated exclusively to Spanish-language cinema, held annually in March in Malaga, celebrating Spanish and Ibero-American films with major industry prizes and Spain's biggest domestic red carpet event.
Overview
The Festival de Malaga is Spain's most important festival dedicated exclusively to Spanish-language cinema. Founded in 1998 and held annually in March in Malaga, the festival presents Spanish and Ibero-American films from Spain, Latin America, and Portugal in a competitive program that culminates in the Biznaga Awards -- Spain's most important domestic film prizes.
The Biznaga de Oro (Golden Biznaga) is Spain's equivalent of France's Cesar -- the most important national film award outside the Goya Awards. Spanish cinema professionals consider a Malaga Biznaga selection and win as among the most meaningful domestic recognitions available.
The festival's March timing, in early spring on the Costa del Sol, creates a glamorous Mediterranean atmosphere. Malaga's cultural reinvention -- from industrial port to arts destination, anchored by the Picasso Museum and a string of museums and galleries -- gives the festival a growing cultural prestige.
