Overview

The Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR) is the world's oldest and largest film festival dedicated to architecture, cities, and the built environment. Founded in 2000, AFFR celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2025. The next edition runs October 7 to 25, 2026, across three Rotterdam venues: Theater Rotterdam (opening night, October 7), LantarenVenster (regular screenings, October 8 to 11), and Nieuwe Instituut (immersive media exhibition, October 8 to 25).

AFFR screens over 80 films per edition, including documentaries, fiction, shorts, and immersive media projects. The festival programs films that explore how architecture, cities, and society intersect on screen. Submissions are free through the AFFR Submission Portal, with a 10 EUR regular fee and 15 EUR extended deadline fee through FilmFreeway.

The festival launched its first awards ceremony in 2025, presenting the King Kong Award (jury-selected prize for a feature-length film premiering at AFFR) and the Audience Award. The inaugural King Kong Award went to The Town that Drove Away by Grzegorz Kielawski and Natalia Pietsch.

Submission Details

Submissions are accepted via two platforms: the AFFR Submission Portal (free) or FilmFreeway (10 EUR regular / 15 EUR extended deadline).

AFFR 2026 deadlines:

• Film submissions: open until May 2, 2026
• Immersive Media productions: open until March 31, 2026
• Notification: mid-August 2026 for films, May 2026 for immersive media

Eligibility requirements:

• All formats and genres are accepted, provided there is a clear connection to architecture and the built environment
• Films must include a secure online screener, a synopsis, production details, and stills
• The festival accepts short films, mid-length films, and feature films
• Immersive media projects are eligible for the separate immersive program at Nieuwe Instituut

What Filmmakers Should Know

AFFR is the only major festival exclusively dedicated to architecture and urbanism cinema. For documentary filmmakers who have made films about architects, buildings, urban planning, or the built environment, AFFR provides the most targeted audience available: a mix of design professionals, architects, urban planners, students, and engaged general audiences.

The festival has been based at LantarenVenster since 2011, a cinema on Rotterdam's Wilheminapier designed by Alvar Aalto. Rotterdam profiles itself as an international city for contemporary architecture and urbanism, and AFFR is a core part of that cultural identity.

The King Kong Award, launched in 2025, is awarded by a professional jury to a recent feature-length film having its premiere at AFFR. The winner receives a sculpture created by Studio Marco Vermeulen and a monetary prize. The Audience Award is determined by viewer ratings during the festival.

The 2025 edition screened over 80 films and introduced the festival's first immersive media program, Realitiesn, at Nieuwe Instituut. This expansion into immersive media creates a new submission pathway for VR, AR, and installation-based works exploring spatial and architectural themes.

Festival History

AFFR was founded in 2000 by the Rotterdam Film Fund, the Netherlands Architecture Institute, and the Rotterdam Development Company. The first edition was held in preparation for Rotterdam's role as European Capital of Culture. The festival was the first architecture film festival in the world.

Early editions were irregular: festivals took place in 2000, 2001, and 2003, followed by a hiatus. AFFR resumed in 2007 and expanded significantly in 2009. From 2017 onward, the festival became an annual event.

The festival found its permanent home at LantarenVenster in 2011. The venue, designed by Alvar Aalto and located on Rotterdam's Wilheminapier, provides an architecturally significant setting for a festival dedicated to the built environment.

The King Kong Business Club and Club Fountainhead membership programs were established to build and maintain a loyal audience base. The festival celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2025 with over 80 films, the first awards ceremony, and the launch of the Realitiesn immersive media program.

AFFR is organized by Stichting Architectuur Filmfestival Rotterdam, a foundation with the statutory objective of promoting public and professional interest in architecture and urban planning through cinema.
